Gastric Ulcers

It's been estimated that 90% of all horses will have ulcers at some point in their lives. Equine ulcers have many causes, and high on the list is stress, both physical and mental. Stressed individuals produce excess corticosteroids, which in turn stimulate acid secretion. Then there is the long-term use of drugs and medications. Bute, aspirin, etc., really pre-dispose horses towards ulcers.

Lifestyle Matters

Lack of food in the stomach can be a trigger. The acids in a horse's stomach are so powerful that a horse may begin to develop ulcers in as short a time as 5 hours without forage or vegetation. Extended inactivity - lack of turnout, or stall rest because of illness or orthopedic problems - favors ulcer formation. A study at Oklahoma State University found that strict confinement resulted in ulcers in 90% of horses in two to four weeks.

An Ounce of Prevention...

The best treatment for ulcers is prevention. Minimize risk by leaving hay in front of horses at all times. (Alfalfa hay has a naturally buffering effect on stomach acids.) Don't feed large amounts of grain all at once: break the meals into small portions and feed more frequently during the day. Provide as much turn-out as possible: grazing releases saliva, the source of bicarbonate that naturally buffers the stomach. And for extra insurance, feed a nutritional supplement that acts to soothe and protect the mucus membranes of the stomach.
