Question: If you use an internal insect deterrent do you still need to use a fly spray?

YES! And if it's a natural, herbal fly spray, you'll need to re-apply it, because no natural spray is effective for longer than half a day. And alternate the repellents you're using. A different spray every month will keep insects from adapting. Use face masks and fly sheets for turnout. If your horse is prone to sweet itch, avoid turnout during the worst periods for biting midges - daybreak, early evening, warm, humid days. And cover one more base by using a shampoo containing insect-repelling Tea Tree Oil.

Citronella, used in some of these natural blends, is non-toxic & very effective. But be aware that it can cause eye irritation. Always wipe, don't spray, on your horse's face. Be very careful where you spray it on nursing mares because a foal might rub against the mare with its eyes.

Spalding Labs - Fly Control

Fly Predators are not a magic “new” fly control product. They are perhaps nature's original fly control. You almost certainly have some of the species that are included in our Fly Predator® brand beneficial insects already working for you on your property. They're part of the reason you aren't literally knee deep in flies. You may have way too many flies, but without these good bugs, it would be far worse.

By simply increasing the ratio of Fly Predators to flies you can almost completely suppress the flies. With a higher than normal population of Fly Predators, they parasitize almost every pupae, which means hardly any flies. They do the work and you enjoy the benefit.

There's no downside as the Fly Predators do not bother either people or animals. Equally important you stop flies before they have a chance to reproduce. A 4% survival rate means you've got around 15 new flies coming for every one you see today as each female fly can lay up to 900 eggs. That's why controlling flies by just attacking the adults with sprays, baits, traps, etc. is almost always a losing battle.

Wouldn’t it be nice to Kiss Flies Goodbye this summer? If so, I urge you to try Fly Predators.
